careerThere is no greater role for a board than choosing the right CEO, so, the exit of the chief executive—particularly if it is unexpected—puts serious pressure (and a spotlight) on the board. How prepared are boards for a sudden leadership vacuum? Even non-abrupt changes of the CEO can rattle nerves and disrupt. How often should the board pro-actively assess if they still have the right CEO when the business has evolved in a different or expanded direction? Today, with shareholders, investors and regulators pressing the issue, many boards still lack substantial succession plans. Our panelists, who have collectively been through every kind of CEO change, will also share what they have learned about: Why is it often such a “sensitive” issue—does it need to be? What to do if you have a small (or zero) “bench”? How to get beyond “we’ll do that tomorrow” thinking? How to mitigate being caught off guard How to ensure the business doesn’t crumble while looking for a new leader? They also will discuss how the board can be better prepared to assess changes that sometimes need to be made.
Speakers include: Robert Jafek, Interim CEO, GUNNAR.Paul Laikind, Ph.D., President, CEO, ViaCyte, Inc.; chair emeritus, CONNECT. Tyler Orion, Former interim CEO & former COO, CONNECT.
