附校长信全文:

Dear Barnard Community,

As you are all aware, San Diego Unified School District is faced with a serious budget crisis that will potentially have devastating effects on all schools. Barnard Mandarin Chinese Magnet School is not immune from these dangers, and we as a community must unite to let the Board of Education know that we need to maintain our successful program.

Four years ago, the Board of Education approved the existence of our Mandarin Program hoping to attract more students and to prevent the school from closing due to low test scores and lack of parent involvement. Now in 2011, Barnard is one of the most successful and innovative schools in the district, and yet the Board is failing to recognize and meet the most minimal needs here at Barnard. Here are some examples:

* Layoff notices were given to our hard working teachers, 4 being our Mandarin Immersion teachers. These layoff notices need to be rescinded immediately for all our teachers due to the unique work they do for our program.

* District must fund at least one additional allocation for our Literacy Resource Teacher, Nicole Levinson. Here are some of her duties:

1. Conducts assessments to determine student reading levels within the immersion classrooms
2. Helps develop guided reading groups within the immersion classrooms
3. Implements pull-out guided reading groups for the immersion classrooms
4. Provides RTI (reading intervention) for those who perform below and significantly below grade level in 2nd – 4th grades
5.Coordinates and implements professional development and related follow-up activities for staff
6. Consults with parents and teachers to recommend at-home strategies to improve reading skills during SSTs and parent conferences
7. Developed and implemented 8 Reading Strategies Seminars for parents of our immersion students

* Restoring Transportation to meet the needs of students who have “choiced” in from all over the county to take advantage of the Mandarin Immersion Program.

How can you help? We must let the Board members know the amazing accomplishment we have achieved in such short period of time and the International recognition we are receiving as being one of the best Mandarin Language and Culture Programs in the world, and a high achieving school!

Lastly, we ask our community to attend the upcoming Board Meetings on May 10th and May 24th to be the voice for our program by speaking during public testimony time. Please be diplomatic and share all the wonderful accomplishments that we achieved in the last 3 years.
